Rabbi Ted Falcon, Ph.D., teaches a Kabbalistic approach to Judaism through practices of Jewish meditation and the interpretation of Torah, ritual, and Jewish tradition from a spiritual point of view.
A Reform rabbi with a doctorate in clinical psychology, he is co-author (with David Blatner) of Judaism For Dummies and author of Journey of Awakening: Using the Kabbalistic Tree of Life in Jewish Meditation. A teacher and student of Jewish meditation for over twenty-five years, Rabbi Falcon teaches Torah as a paradigm for spiritual awakening, sharing his discoveries of the rich but relatively hidden treasures of Jewish spiritual texts.
Ordained in 1968 at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Rabbi Falcon initially encountered meditation through his interest and study of psychology. In 1975, he earned a doctorate in clinical psychology with research focused on the nature of meditative and mystical states of consciousness. Since then, his psychotherapeutic work bridges the psychological and the spiritual, encouraging deeper integration for greater freedom of personal action and understanding.
The model for the meditative synagogue began in Los Angeles in 1976, after Rabbi Falcon and a small group gathered for High Holyday meditations. The group was born out of his need to explore this form of Jewish worship and grew into first monthly, then bi-monthly Shabbat services. He shared both meditative practices and teaching with that group, and in 1978 officially formed Makom Ohr Shalom, a Synagogue for Jewish Meditation. Today, Makom Ohr Shalom, which means "A Place for the Light of Wholeness," continues to be among the largest synagogues of its kind.
Rabbi Falcon and his family moved to Seattle in 1993 when he and his wife, Ruth Neuwald Falcon, founded Bet Alef Meditative Synagogue. He brings Jewish traditions of meditation and spirituality to those seeking the spiritual essence of their identity. Although focused in the Pacific Northwest, Rabbi Falcon teaches and leads retreats around the country, as well as leading groups and seeing individuals for spiritual counseling.
Rabbi Ted teaches the Way of the Heart, an inner path of an Inner Path. With gentleness and humor, he offers unique insight into Jewish tradition as he helps draw a community into celebration. His work deeply affirms the integrity of each individual being.
