Family Shabbat School and Adult Torah Study

Bet Alef Shabbat School Bet Alef's Family Shabbat School and Adult Torah Study gives our community the opportunity for all ages to learn together. In our classes for both adults and children, we incorporate the unique Jewish spiritual focus of Bet Alef as well as Rabbi Ted Falcon's exceptional ability to teach ancient Jewish traditions and text in a way that is accessible and easy to apply in our modern lives.

Our classes are for adults and children from
Preschool – 5th grade. After 5th grade our students graduate into our Paths of Connection B'nai Mitzvah program. We meet at 10:00 AM on the Saturdays following the 1st and 3rd Fridays
of the month. Each session, children join their teachers in multi-age classes while adults continue their Torah Study with Rabbi Falcon followed by a brief service with adults and children together.

Our Goal

The goal of Family Shabbat School is to bring the ideas, ideals, principles and practices of Bet Alef to our children and families through a community and group learning experience: These include:

  • Our meditative approach to worship, ritual, life-cycle events, study, and
    Jewish identity
  • Supporting a spiritual deepening that can express through acts of greater compassion in the world
  • Linking our spirituality to daily living

Bet Alef's Family Shabbat School bases its curriculum on Chai: Learning For Jewish Life from Union For Reform Judaism. The lessons from this curriculum aim to nurture "enduring understandings," values that have lifetime meaning. The curriculum core is designed around the fundamental lessons of Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim (acts of lovingkindness).

The approach of CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life curriculum core, ensures that student learning will go beyond the specific classroom activities and will reach a deeper enduring understanding, which will establish the basis for later Jewish learning and living. This curriculum is delivered within the principles and practices of Bet Alef and Rabbi Falcon's approach to Jewish learning.

Enduring Understandings:
Torah

  • Torah is an ongoing dialogue between the text and its students.
  • Torah is real in our daily lives; it is with us wherever we are.
  • Developing the skills to study Torah is essential to integrating Torah into our lives.
Avodah
  • Avodah is the work we do to find sacred connections to God, community, and self
  • Engaging in the work of Avodah can bring order, beauty, meaning and insight to
    our lives.
G'milut Chasadim
  • We have a responsibility to perform acts of G'milut Chasadim to make the world a better, holier place.
