How Can You Support Bet Alef?

We ask members and non-members to support our community in other special ways because Membership Dues alone are not sufficient for any synagogue to cover the entire budget. Bet Alef is very careful in our spending, but there are considerable expenses involved in maintaining and growing our Jewish spiritual community. We are able to operate without a building fund by renting our facilities, so rental costs are a substantial part of our budget. We seek to acknowledge the special qualities of our rabbi, musicians and office staff with appropriate compensation. Every donation is a greatly appreciated gift and blessing. Please remember that your support and presence are valued regardless of your ability to make a financial contribution. Here are some ways that you can contribute:

Direct Donations

There are many opportunities to donate directly to Bet Alef.

  • Donations can be made to a General Fund at any time to support the ongoing operations of the synagogue.
  • Donations may also be made to support a particular program which has a special interest or significance to you.
  • Donations to the Music Program are always appreciated.
  • On Friday nights at Shabbat Services, members have the opportunity to sponsor an Oneg and light candles to celebrate a special event with the community. You can find more information about sponsoring an Oneg here.
It is traditional to make donations at times of remembrance, particularly at the yarzheit (anniversary) of the death of a loved one; and for celebrations of birthdays and anniversaries.Donations can be made by contacting the Bet Alef Office. Donation boxes are also available at Shabbat Services.

Shellie Oakley Fund

Shellie Oakley

In honor of Shellie’s seven years of selfless and dedicated service as our Executive Director, this fund is being establish to facilitate the transformation of the Harvard Room to a “living room” space that will be a place of gathering, community, and connection. Anyone who knows Shellie, knows that community is one of her highest values, and creating opportunities for us to connect is one of her many gifts to our Bet Alef family.

Michael Geller Fund

Michael Geller

Michael’s love for the Bet Alef community was felt by all who knew him. His leadership as past president and chair of the membership committee has been integral in creating Bet Alef as the warm and nurturing community that it is. It is Jewish custom to make a donation in lieu of flowers; to honor Michael’s deep love for our Bet Alef Community, the Geller family requested and the Board has agreed to create a special Michael Geller Fund. Whether used for opportunities for members to develop new leadership skills or perhaps an endowment fund, Michael’s wife Carolyn will be involved with the Board in deciding the best use for the funds. You can donate by clicking here or you can also send a check to Bet Alef, 1111 Harvard Ave., Seattle, WA.

The Geller Family is generously offering a match for up to $3,000 to all donations to the Michael Geller Fund. Donate now.

In Loving Memory of TJ Sundsvold:

A TJ Sundsvold Fund has been created in memory of our friend and Bet Alef member TJ, who died on Monday, May 6, 2013. While TJ was eager to support our community at large, we think it most fitting that donations be dedicated to supporting Rabbi Olivier and the Mitzvah Committee in their compassionate pastoral care of others.

Other Ways To Donate:

Candle Lighting:

We invite members of Bet Alef to light a candle at Shabbat Services in honor of a special blessing or celebration. This can be a celebration of a recent accomplishment, a memorial to a loved one, or anything else you would like to share. There is a suggested donation of $18 (chai) for lighting a candle. To arrange to light a candle at a specific Shabbat, please email

Matching Funds:

Many large companies provide matching funds for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit agencies such as Bet Alef. They encourage employees to spend more time and resources helping the agencies that they care about the most. We ask that you please check to see if your company has a matching funds program.
